Le Suite Gesu: Carrying the Cross: 10th Proof

Couple of things going on since I last posted. One, I think I have this ink figured out. I had a bag of soaked Stonehenge sitting around for the last five days, and it wasn't so wet and printed like gangbusters. Every square inch printed beautifully. I still have some polishing to do in places where I scraped, but this is getting close to an artist's proof.

Le Suite Gesu: Carrying the Cross: 9th Proof

I thought I'd really messed this up. The proofs were coming out part ghostly and some lines were popping out and didn't belong and I don't know what. But I went and redrew almost everything and etched it again. Now it works.

Le Suite Gesu: Printing Stonehenge Paper with Charbonnel Aqua Wash

The only thing I wish wasn't so is how easily Charbonnel Aqua Wash ink breaks up in water. Akua requires soap to break it up, but Aqua Wash dissolves the second it gets overly wet. Makes for easy cleanup of plates, but if the paper is more than a little damp, it bleeds and that aint good.

Le Suite Gesu: Carrying the Cross: 7th & 8th ProofS

This densely pigmented Charbonnel is murder to wipe. The proof on the left, #7, is paper-wiped. The one on the right, #8, is hand-wiped after I added a few drops of Aqua Wash Oil to the ink. Not much difference, except some parts print a little crisper in #8.

Le Suite Gesu: Carrying the Cross: 6th Proof

I don't have much to say I didn't mention it the previous post. I have to do some serious work on this and the Crowning with Thorns. Scourging came out as I hoped it would. Now for the tough work on these.

Le Suite Gesu: Scourging: Artist's Proof

This was a pretty messy print just a day ago, with all types of mottling and visual noise, even though I liked a lot of it. No one is in complete control when making intaglio. You take what happens and try to make art out of it.

Le Suite Gesu: Crowning with Thorns: 5th Proof

I've been working towards this very dark, worked image since I started this print. Now I probably just use scraping, burnishing, and polishing to finish up the print.

Le Suite Gesu: Scourging: 5th Proof

If you follow professional golf, you know what Moving Day is. Today was moving day for this print, and also Carrying the Cross, and Crowning with Thorns.

Le Suite Gesu: Scourging: Wash Ground

I've been mulling over how I want to do clouds in the background for a few days, and I decided to scrape out the clouds and apply a wash ground over it.

Le Suite Gesu: Carrying of the Cross, 5th Proof

I'm skipping showing the 4th proof, as I got this one closer to really defining what I want from the print. The "underdrawing" is done, pretty much, on the figure of Jesus. Next comes scraping and layering deeper etches in the face. I might do that with engraving.

Le Suite Gesu: Crowning with Thorns, 4th Proof

This is the second of three I bit on Sunday. I can see the path I'll take with this one, which might inform the other two as well. The upper torso and head is going to be very worked. Lots of layering of bites of varying depths.

Le Suite Gesu: Scourging at the Pillar, 4th Proof

It's coming along. I've yet to scrape and burnish. The running soldier is beginning to do what I want him to do. Now I have to figure out how to make the figure of Jesus into the visual destination of that running figure.
