This plate has been around the studio for months. I soaked it in vinegar before I realized vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and salt make a great ad hoc etching solution. So it had a tone on it very similar to the kind you put on a canvas before starting a painting. I put this image of Jesus on it and gave it a long etch (50 minutes is a long time with this solution). The first proof came out very dark and full of striated foul bite, perfect for the subject matter.
I went through a proof before this and scraped it, but the striations interfered with Christ’s face, so I did a deeper scrape and burnish, and polished the plate also. Then this came up. I see the way to construct this now. The next proof will include a wash ground and maybe some engraving to emphasize the figure.
